Is the end near for TikTok?
15 September 2022Did you know that 96% of people consume news in Australia?
That’s a huge number considering the narrative you often hear that people don’t care about the news, right?
That social media is the “new thing” – and the news media is dead.
Well, that’s not true.
In fact, 50% of people say that news is the reason they check social media in Australia.
Our media consumption habits have changed since the start of the pandemic and the numerous lockdowns, and the desire for news has increased dramatically.
The more we stayed home, the more we wanted to know what was happening in the outside world: and that hasn’t changed since we’ve opened up either.
In fact, television news is the most frequently used news source, followed by radio and social media.
And so, as an organisation, or a brand, if you’re ignoring the media, you’re not tapping into the huge opportunities that exist to get your story in front of the mainstream.
What does a successful media & communications strategy look like?

- First, you need to execute a clear narrative that sells your story, your vision, and ultimately, your brand.
- What is your story?
- Why do you exist?
- How can your brand make a difference in people’s lives?
- Next, you need to ‘sell’ this narrative to the media in a way that grasps their attention and allows for favourable reporting about your story.
- This involves speaking to journalists and editors, in their language, to get interested in your brand.
- It means doing a lot of the research and connecting them with ‘real’ people who can back up your claims… in short, doing a lot of the heavy lifting so the journalist doesn’t have to.
- Train your company spokespeople to be media-friendly.
- Once your story is up, it’s time to amplify it across all your social media platforms and send it to all your stakeholders.
- Once your story is up, it’s time to amplify it across all your social media platforms and send it to all your stakeholders.
- When you’re ready, repeat the process, again and again.
This positions your brand as an authority in the eyes of the public and the media. It supports your mission. Ultimately, it converts into sales.
All of this can be overwhelming – but with the right know-how, expertise and support, you can quickly devise a media and communications strategy that meets your business objectives.
